The current research sheds light on the agricultural missions dispatched whether by the Ministry of Agriculture or the Royal Agricultural Society as one of the important aspects of Egypt's efforts during the Royal Era to promote Egyptian agriculture. These bodies aimed at identifying new experiences, bringing unknown species of crops to Egypt, and to fully benefit from these missions in general.
Since it is not possible to include all the agricultural missions in one research, the researcher has selected certain models, taking into account their spatial and temporal variety, by virtue of the expansion of the kingdom over a long period of time, to ensure the study’s integrity.
The selected agricultural missions include the mission of the Ministry of Agriculture to Java, Singapore and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in 1933, the missions of the Royal Agricultural Society to Palestine in 1944 and to North Africa and Spain in 1950.
The present study covered the itinerary of the first mission from the starting point of Port Said on September 5, 1933, passing through some of the places it quickly landed, until its arrival in Batavia, the capital of Java, on September 21. Also, it tackled its subsequent visit to the famous botanical garden in Buitenzorg, then to Pasarmingho, where the fruit experiment station is located, and other places in Java detailed within the study. The mission then moved to Singapore and Ceylon, the latter which was the destination of the mission, and to return to the country after a trip that lasted approximately three and a half months.
For the second missions deputed by the Agricultural Society to Palestine in 1944, the study examined in details its visits to many orchards and technical experiment stations, during a ten-day program of the mission beginning on May 26, 1944, and then returned to Egypt on June 5, 1944.
Finally, the study examined the visits during the last mission to North Africa and Spain in April of 1950. The study considers the third mission was the most active one as it will be clarified through the study.
